The Under-Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ambassador Hossam Zaki, welcomed the two-month truce agreement between the parties to the conflict in Yemen, calling it a "gesture of goodwill" towards the Yemeni people in this month of Ramadhan.
"The agreement of the two sides to the conflict in Yemen on a ceasefire truce is a gesture of goodwill that can be leveraged, as the humanitarian situation in the country has become extremely difficult," said Hossam Zaki.
The Undersecretary General of the Arab League stressed that the conclusion by the Yemeni parties of this truce is "very important", as it paves the way for the "Yemeni people to improve their situation during the holy month of Ramadhan at least", and warned against the seriousness of the situation "which requires a great mobilization".
The truce in Yemen came into effect on Saturday evening, the day after the UN announced that the parties to the conflict in the country had responded "positively" to a two-month truce proposal.
The announcement of this truce came after inter-Yemeni consultations were held on Wednesday in Ryadh, in the absence of elements of the Houthis armed movement.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for "using this momentum" to ensure that this truce is "fully respected and renewed".
According to the United Nations, the conflict between the Yemeni government and the Houthis has resulted in the deaths of nearly 380,000 people, most of them indirect deaths related to hunger, disease and lack of clean water, while millions more have been displaced.
A large part of the population, especially children, is facing acute hunger, with situations close to famine.
