Quietly, one of the leading figures of the Algerian press left on Friday. Lilia Allouache, a journalist emeritus, a woman with a big heart, who signed under the pseudonym Houria Akram, will have marked the memory of her newspaper, El Moudjahid, for three decades, during which she made the great days of the cultural and national columns.
A tireless adventurer, she traveled all over the conference halls, palaces of culture, ministries, the presidency, remote regions of the South and a good number of countries, to do her job, report the facts and cover events as sad as they were festive.
With this experience, she naturally turned to parliamentary journalism, spending countless hours roaming the corridors of the national people’s assembly and the Council of the Nation, looking for the scoop and the unpublished fact. This tireless quest for reliable information earned her the recognition of her peers and the respect of the personalities she worked with. How many times has the great Houria Akram, who was known only by this name in press circles, been honored? Honors have certainly been scattered throughout her career, but she did not care, preferring a life in the shadows and discretion.
We, her colleagues and friends, remember her as a calm and discreet journalist, but she was always able to make memorable statements when faced with injustice. Known for not having her tongue in her mouth, she also had her heart on her sleeve and an unparalleled generosity of spirit, helping those most in need with the utmost discretion.
Life was not kind to her, who was born and lived as an orphan, raising two children alone after a painful divorce. Today Yanis and Ania, her two proudest children, find themselves alone, without father or mother. And it is with great sadness that we share their sorrow and we bow to the memory of this great lady whose journey has been full of pitfalls and sacrifices.
For my part, I remember your spirit of solidarity with your colleagues and your sense of self-sacrifice that made you always seek a better life for yourself and your children, you who took in your ex-husband and cared for him until he left this world.
Some time ago, you retired with the firm intention of enjoying a rest after all these years of hard work. Fate decided otherwise.
Rest in peace, Lilia, you will never be forgotten. You are now part of the heritage of El Moudjahid.
